The Atkins in Hopeman wanted to make better use of their garage roof, generate their own electricity and charge their electric vehicle with energy produced at home.
aes renewables installed a solar PV system designed around the available garage roof space and the way the household uses energy.
During the day, the system generates electricity that can help power the home and charge the homeowners’ electric vehicle. A MyEnergi Eddi was also installed to divert surplus solar electricity into hot water, instead of sending it straight back to the grid.
Together, the system supports:
After 1 full year, the system performed above its original forecast.
Expected annual generation was 4,750 kWh, but the system produced more than 6,000 kWh. That extra generation helped the homeowners rely far less on their oil boiler for hot water during the warmer months and charge their Renault Zoe almost entirely using solar electricity.
The homeowner also exported 2,400 kWh back to the grid.
“We should have had solar fitted years ago.” – Mr Bob Atkins
This project shows how solar PV can support more than household electricity use.
For the homeowners, the system helps make better use of roof space, lowers reliance on grid electricity and supports EV charging from energy generated at home. The MyEnergi Eddi also helps the household use more of its own solar power by sending surplus generation to hot water.
The result is a practical home energy system that supports daily life, from the house to the driveway.
