Inverallan Parish Church in Grantown-on-Spey has served its community for generations. As a 19th-century Church of Scotland building, it remains an important place for worship, events and local activities.
Like many historic buildings, the church was facing rising energy costs. The congregation needed a practical way to reduce running costs and improve long-term financial stability, without compromising the character of the building.
The main challenge was making sure the solar PV installation would be suitable for a historic setting.
Early feedback raised concerns about visual impact, so the system had to balance performance, cost savings and the appearance of the church. Working closely with planners and local stakeholders, the final design supported the church’s energy needs while respecting the building.
The in-roof panels were key to the design. By sitting within the roofline, they helped reduce visual impact and protect the character of the church.
aes renewables also worked with Badenoch Roofing Ltd to make sure the installation was carried out carefully.
Inverallan Parish Church can now generate and store its own electricity on site.
This helps reduce reliance on grid electricity and gives the congregation more control over future energy costs. Battery storage means energy can also be saved for later use.
For the congregation, greater control over energy use brings more certainty around future costs, helping the church direct more resources towards its community role.
This project shows how renewable energy can support historic and community buildings when it’s designed carefully.
By combining in-roof solar PV with battery storage, Inverallan Parish Church has a system that supports lower running costs while respecting the character of the building.
The result is a more resilient, cost-effective energy system for a church that continues to serve its community from the same historic setting.
