Ashers Bakery in Nairn needed a practical way to reduce reliance on grid electricity and bring more control to the energy used across its busy site.
From ovens and production equipment to lighting and refrigeration, a working bakery needs a steady supply of power throughout the day.
For Ashers, solar PV and battery storage offered a way to generate more electricity on site, store more of that energy and use it when the bakery needed it.
Working with architects Haysom Ward Miller, aes renewables designed and installed a solar PV and solar thermal system for the property.
The roof construction meant a standard mounting approach wasn’t suitable, so the system was designed around the roofline, exposed coastal setting and off-grid requirements.

The completed system helps Lochside House generate, store and use renewable energy on site.

Lochside House went on to be named House of the Year 2018 on Channel 4’s Grand Designs, with its renewable energy system forming part of a wider award-winning home.

For Lochside House, the system supports independent living in a remote setting while respecting the home’s design. It shows how careful planning can make renewable energy work well in architecturally sensitive buildings.
