The brief

Ashers Bakery in Nairn needed a practical way to reduce reliance on grid electricity and bring more control to the energy used across its busy site.

From ovens and production equipment to lighting and refrigeration, a working bakery needs a steady supply of power throughout the day.

For Ashers, solar PV and battery storage offered a way to generate more electricity on site, store more of that energy and use it when the bakery needed it.

Our approach

Working with architects Haysom Ward Miller, aes renewables designed and installed a solar PV and solar thermal system for the property.

The roof construction meant a standard mounting approach wasn’t suitable, so the system was designed around the roofline, exposed coastal setting and off-grid requirements.

The installation included:

  • 5 solar PV panels
  • 2 solar thermal panels
  • Battery storage connection
  • Additional wind loading calculations for the exposed location

aes renewables also developed a safe way to feed energy from the solar array into the home’s battery system, helping the property store power for later use.

The outcome

The completed system helps Lochside House generate, store and use renewable energy on site.

Solar PV, solar thermal and battery storage work together to support electricity, hot water and summer self-sufficiency without a grid connection.
